Boomer Business Success – Keeping it Simple!
Posted on | September 22, 2011 | 6 Comments
I had the pleasure of sitting in a meeting today with one of my clients. She was doing a
presentation to a group of people in the area of her specialty. What she does is unimportant, but what I saw in her inspired me to write this article and challenge we Boomers looking to grow our businesses to keep it simple.
Keeping it simple means:
- Don’t over think things. I remember hearing about Occam’s razor. This is a scientific principle that indicates that, “when faced with competing hypotheses that are equal in other respects, selecting the one that makes the fewest new assumptions.” In other words the easiest answer is most often the best answer.
- Find a niche and master it. Being an expert in your chosen niche makes you more valuable to your clients/customers than if you are simply good at a lot of things. Most people can be good, but only experts are sought after.
- Learn the honestly care for your customers/clients. When you have an honest concern for those who buy your products and services, you will treat them with the utmost respect and they will make you their sole supplier!
There you have it! Boomer business success, by just keeping it simple!

Hi I to felt inspired by what you wrote I often find myself in what I say beating my head against a brick wall! I and I think many others have the problem of over thinking things. In truth I think it Is my way of justifying procrastination on my part. This is one habit I must over come. This article helped me to realize I need to stay focused and get to doing ! Enough thinking about it ! Thanks David @ The Fortunesaver

Thanks Dave!
I think the “keep it simple” and “less is more” message is the key to boomer success going forward. We’ve spent our lives working 60-80 hour days and ended up layed off and unable to retire. Time to focus on what’s really valuable in life, and build businesses that will support our lifestyles. Simple businesses where we do one thing very well are the ticket!
Keep teaching it!

Thanks for the kind words Kel – If what we do in business doesn’t reflect our life essence, then we need to re-think what we do!

I’m in the “docked” in the same boat of procrastination out of fear for years. Time to get rowing! Thanks for the inspiration. Now…..If I can just find the time to pursue my idea(s) and narrow down to that one great niche to keep it simple. My biggest hang up is health insurance…..

Janet – I understand (having health insurance is a huge issue) how that can be a hang-up. But, if you have that benefit now, you can start the search process slowly and then work your way into your niche in such a way as to be able to “hit the ground running” when you are ready to step away completely.
