Now don’t loose hope, what is happening is that I am going to move all of the information from BBE to my primary business site (Doulos Marketing).

My concern for the plight of Boomers in this crazy world economy is as fervent as ever, I am just having a difficult time making everything fit into my life these days and with so much of what I post here really duplicated at Doulos Marketing, I have made the decision to combine the two.

So, we gotta say good-bye for now, but check in over at Doulos Marketing and let’s get reacquainted there! You can also follow me on Twitter @doulosmarketing (Business) or @davewellman (Personal) and check out my personal perspective on the pursuit of the quiet and peaceable life at DaveWellman.net.

The run is not over, its just changing locations! Come join in and “let’s rock!”

I remember an old American Airlines commercial in which the owner of a company called his sales team into a conference room to tell them

Image via Wikipedia

that things were not going so well. As a matter of fact the owner had just gotten off the phone with an old friend who had just fired his company.

In the commercial the owner was handing out plane tickets to all the cities where the company had clients so that each sales manager could go and visit with them in person. After tucking the last ticket in his own pocket someone asked him where is was going. His answer, “I am going to see an old friend.”

In the fast paced world of the internet, sometimes we need to understand that what makes businesses grow and continue to do so is not to “like” thousands, or “follow” the gurus, but to spend time with some well chosen friends.

Just a thought. What do you think?

I started a blog in April called “An Old Hippie.” With all the busyness that often controls my life, I never really got it off the ground. I did,

Image by Lisa Norwood via Flickr

however write an article that I would like to re-publish here. With all the craziness that we see around us these days, I hope that you will find this post of value to you!

I just finished reading several news articles today from crazy storms, to domestic violence, to the upheaval in Syria, high gas prices, and the beat goes on!

It seems to me that this old world is getting crazier and crazier. And we think, in our day, that we are way more sophisticated, so much more advanced, so much more intelligent than those who have proceeded us. That sounds even more crazy to me. After all what is it that we have (besides some pretty cool technology) that make us “better” than previous generations?

We have cooler stuff – but we also have people who will kill us to take it away.
We have better equipment for producing food and staples – but we have more people without than ever before.
We have more oil than ever before – but the gas prices are headed for new highs.
We have more global wealth than every before – but nearly every country on the planet is suffering from current or near financial collapse.
We have more free education available – but we have fewer truly educated people.

I could go on and on about the great things we have and how they are not making our lives better, safer, or less fearful. But these examples ought to make us understand that we live in a crazy world! And the prospects for the future are more of the same. Crazier and crazier!

So, what’s the answer? In one sentence it is, “We must choose to live a quiet and peaceable life, honoring God and loving God’s creation.” I remember the old hippie song that said, “All we are saying is give peace a chance ….” I’m in, how about you?

Peace comes when I live without fear, but also when I live in a state of satisfaction and rest. Knowing that as I work to care for myself and my family that what I produce will meet our needs and wants. Then, as a proponent of peace, if I am granted an abundance, I should look for ways to make that available to those who cannot care for themselves (I did say cannot, not would not).

You see, this is how it used to be! People working hard and benefiting from their efforts. It used to be that we did not think that someone else “owed” us something. We worked for ourselves and ended the days satisfied that our labor had produced positive results. Then, when we heard of others in need, we would give of our bounty for their benefit as well.

Yep. the world is crazy. Crazy because we have turned truth inside out and made ourselves to be slaves of the system rather than free men and women able to do and be what we choose through hard work and satisfaction.

What do you think?

While trying to quietly update this site and convert it from a traditional blog site to a members site, people found me last week and started to join!

I just wanted to post a quick site update, because I am incredibly excited with the activity over the past week. At the beginning of last week my efforts were to quietly update the site throughout the month of December and then launch it in its new configuration and with its new mission on January 1, 2012. (This is still my ultimate goal, but it has been modified just a bit!)

To my shock, last week several people actually joined the site as members! There are eight of us total (and one “practice” member) as of this writing. Eight doesn’t seem like much, but seven of the eight came “by accident” (I was here on purpose)! I am so thrilled that folks both found the site and that they saw enough value to “join.”

So, for those of you who have joined in this “pre-launch” period, I need your help. I would like you to act as a sounding board for ideas that I have for the site. Please take time as often as you can to read these December posts that will lay out the ideas that will guide us here and will set the course for the new year.

Comment on what you read, give me feedback, additional thoughts, and your thoughts on both the direction of the site and how to accomplish the goals I will lay out in my December posts. As long as you are here early (which I count an incredible blessing) let me know what you think!

If you know some other Boomers who could bring some really cool thoughts to the table, invite them to join us as well!

I look forward to hearing from you and to gaining insight that will help me do the most good for the greatest number of Boomers!

Thanks for being here – Dave

Image by Alex Osterwalder via Flickr

I have been engaged in an interesting discussion on LinkedIn with several people about business models. Which models are viable and which one’s should be avoided. As a Boomer myself, whose desire is to build a strong and successful business for myself as well as for my clients, a conversation like this can be a constructive one (or destructive if you are not careful).

The business models in question in this conversation are not really relevant but the conversation is. Here are my thoughts:

No one business model is right for everyone. In the conversation people have spoken both positively and negatively about every business model in the conversation. Some like the idea of finding that perfect, unique, niche business; some like the comfort of brick and mortar; others like franchise or “franchise-like” businesses. In the end business success comes when you find the business model that works for you and you pursue that!

Everyone considering a retirement business needs to do their own due diligence. Even as a business development coach, I cannot do your due diligence for you. All I can do is to help you search out the facts and help you understand/interpret them. Ultimately you must make sense of the facts and choose the business model that best suits you.

Don’t ever let one person (excited or angry) about a particular business model make this kind of decision for you. For every person who someone knows that has gotten “taken” by the bad people in one model, I can show you someone who was “taken” by the bad people in another model. I once had a car that leaked oil. Does that mean I should sway every person I know from buying that model car? (Even if I don’t tell you about my lack of care for the car as well?)

My point here is that in the world of business, every business model has its pros and cons. What you need to do is assess each model as to how well you could work with these pros and cons. Make your decisions based upon your investigation and due diligence, not based on someones hype or bad experiences!

Image via Wikipedia

Entrepreneurs is moving in the direction of a full-blown member site and I am very excited to see how its develops throughout the year. I will be adding details for the official “launch” during the last couple weeks of December so stay tuned and let me know what you think!

In the mean time, you can sign up as members of the site right now and by doing so you can get in on the ground floor of all the excitement that the new year will bring. So make sure that you begin now to not only sign up yourself, but to share this site with all your Boomer friends and help me kick this thing off with a bang in January.

Let be “bait the hook” by telling you about three unique aspects that you will find here:

1. There will be a section on the site called “Boomers helping Boomers.” This section will cover everything from “how-to” information to “aging in place” advice, to travel tips, etc. It will be a place for Boomers to learn about living a life full of joy, impact, and security.

2. There well be a section on the site called “Boomers, Business, and Finances.” This section will help Boomers understand all aspects of living financially secure through the entire second act of their lives. We will have information on the current job market and how unemployed Boomers can find meaningful work, business opportunities for Boomers, financial planning and how to reinvent retirement.

3. There will be a section on the site called “Making a Dent.” This section will help Boomers join forces and create opportunities to leave our world better than when we found it. It seems to me that when all we think about is ourselves and how life is about us that we really diminish the true meaning of life.

Being the “dreamer” on my team, I don’t know all the details about how this is going to pan out, but I do know that this is the direction we are heading. I would love for you and those you invite to be an active part!

Stay tuned and stay active!

Yesterday was my 56th birthday! I had planned a quiet day to just enjoy the fall weather we are having and to relax my way into a new year of life. While the day was a great one, I learned three valuable lessons from another birthday:

I learned that, on your birthday, you are really no different than you were the day before, just another day older. I woke up with the same mindset, the same desires, the same passions, and the same determination to make a dent in the universe!

I learned that, on your birthday, the rest of the world does not take the day off to celebrate! Throughout the course of the day, I had to take care of clients and their needs, handle problems that cropped up, and generally get involved in things that did not involve celebrating my birthday!

I learned that, on your birthday, taking a day off of life is awesome! While the world didn’t stop and I had to spend time on things other than celebrating, the day was in its entirety as great success with lots of fun and love from both family and friends. It was a great day and I am so thankful for being able to celebrate another year of my great life!

So, as you work your way through the rigors of life, don’t forget that even if the world doesn’t have the capacity to stop to celebrate your birthday, that it is your God given right to do just that! Happy birthday to all and to all a good night.

What are you willing to do to change the course of history?

With the death of Steve Jobs this past week, I am reminded of his comment that he wanted his life to “make a dent in the universe.” I think that, in many ways, he did just that. But now that he is gone, who will step up? Who will be the next visionary to make a dent in the universe?

Maybe, it’s time to be you! Maybe instead of just getting by it’s time for us all to look at this world through the visionary eyes that make us unique people and choose to follow our dreams. Maybe, at least in my own “world,” I should step up and look for ways to change the course of history.

What do you think? What are you willing to do to change the course of history?
